Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens has sharply criticized the Democratic National Committee (DNC) for not including his city in the shortlist for the 2028 national convention. Dickens stated that the DNC's decision suggests a disregard for Atlanta and Georgia's significance to the past, present, and future of the Democratic Party. He specifically referenced comments made by Ken Martin, questioning the party's commitment to the South.
Dickens highlighted Georgia's growing importance for Democrats, noting its shift to a purple state in recent elections and the presence of Democratic senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock. He pointed out that Georgia's electoral votes were secured by Joe Biden in 2020, and President Donald Trump in 2024, underscoring the state's electoral relevance. Dickens argued that the party is "blind to the fact that the South is the answer."
In contrast, the Republican Party has chosen Houston, Texas, to host its 2028 national convention. The DNC did not offer a direct comment on Dickens' criticism but pointed to its selection of South Carolina to lead the 2028 primary calendar and its recent gatherings in New Orleans and Austin as evidence of its investment in the region. Dickens concluded that the DNC's decision to overlook the South is an "intentional choice."
