Apple has developed a large language model specifically for the Chinese market, a significant shift from its previous approach of relying on third-party models for AI features in the country. This proprietary model was trained with the support of Alibaba Group, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The move allows Apple to navigate China's stringent regulatory environment and compete more effectively with local rivals like Huawei, which have already integrated AI into their handsets. Apple Intelligence, the company's suite of AI tools, is expected to launch in China in the coming months following an update to its iOS operating system.
This strategy represents a dual-track deployment for a foreign firm in China, potentially making Apple the first U.S. company approved by Beijing to offer its own AI model in the country. The development follows a regulatory process that concluded last month, clearing the path for Apple's AI services. Under the arrangement, Alibaba's Qwen model and technology from Baidu will be incorporated into the version of Apple Intelligence sold in China.
Alibaba Chairman Joe Tsai had previously confirmed the partnership in February 2025, stating Apple chose to work with Alibaba. The rollout was subsequently delayed to ensure compliance with Chinese regulations. China is a critical market for Apple, and the absence of advanced AI features on iPhones had been seen as a factor impacting sales.
