Since the Taxi-Driver-Offence Points (TDOP) system took effect in September 2024, 229 taxi drivers had incurred demerit points as of October 2, with 125 cases involving a refusal to accept a hire. The system, designed to combat offences such as refusing hire and overcharging passengers, covers 11 offences with points ranging from three to 10 depending on severity.
Among the 66 drivers penalized under the system, 49 incurred 10 points, 12 received five points, and five received three points. No drivers have yet incurred enough points to be disqualified, according to Chan. The government is also distributing leaflets to tourists at the airport and other popular spots to inform visitors of taxi fare rates and has set up "taxi information boards" at major cab stands.
