Ukraine drones hit Russian tankers, kill one person, Russia says

Ukraine has conducted drone strikes against Russian oil infrastructure and maritime assets. The Ukrainian military claimed responsibility for hitting eight Russian tankers in the Sea of Azov. Russia, however, reported that these attacks resulted in one person killed and two empty oil tankers sustaining damage. In addition to the maritime attacks, Ukrainian drones also reportedly struck Russia's Saratov Oil Refinery on the night of July 8, 2026, causing a significant blaze. Russia's Defense Ministry had previously issued a warning regarding a potential drone attack in the Saratov region.

In parallel, Russia is actively working to counter Ukraine's drone operations by employing jamming systems and camouflage tactics. A primary focus of these countermeasures is to disrupt Ukrainian drones that utilize Elon Musk's Starlink satellite internet for communication and control. Starlink has been instrumental in enabling Ukraine's mid-strike drone capabilities, allowing for adjustments and targeting during flight. However, Russia's deployment of jamming technology, including the Volna Kupol Garant system, presents a growing challenge to these operations.
