The World Bank announced on Friday that it has disbursed $200 million to Colombia to aid in the emergency response following a deadly earthquake on August 10. The multilateral development bank is collaborating with the Colombian government, development partners, financial institutions, and the private sector to meet immediate needs and establish foundations for recovery.
In addition to the financial aid, the World Bank has initiated a Global Rapid Assessment of Damages from Earthquakes (GRADE) to provide the Colombian government with an early evaluation of damages and economic losses, assisting in prioritizing aid and reconstruction. The funds are intended to reach affected communities and businesses, with support earmarked for public health, housing, and small and medium-sized enterprises.
The 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday morning, causing apartment blocks to collapse and damaging numerous structures, including homes, schools, and hospitals. As of Friday, authorities reported 285 fatalities, nearly 4,000 injuries, and approximately 400 individuals still missing.
