The United States and Iran have intensified military exchanges across the Middle East, raising concerns about the stability of a tentative ceasefire deal. Reports indicate explosions near Iran's nuclear power plant in Bushehr and strikes on railway bridges in Golestan province and on the route to Mashhad.
Iranian state media quoted a local official accusing the U.S. of striking near the Bushehr nuclear plant. Central Command, when asked for comment, referred to a press release detailing targets that did not mention the nuclear facility. The Revolutionary Guard also reported two bridges were attacked on the route to Mashhad.
These developments follow a tentative deal last month that included opening a key waterway, which has seen increased maritime traffic. In June, at least 576 ships passed through the strait, a notable increase from 233 in May. More than 3,100 transited in June 2025.
Meanwhile, tens of thousands of mourners gathered for the final funeral procession of Khamenei, who ruled Iran for nearly 37 years before being killed in U.S. and Israeli airstrikes that initiated the current conflict. During the procession, some signs called for the death of Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Following a NATO summit, Trump issued warnings to Iran, stating that further attacks on shipping, such as the three tankers attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, would result in much worse consequences. He also reiterated past threats to target Iran's civilian infrastructure, including power and desalination plants, and to seize Kharg Island, a critical hub for Iranian oil exports.
