The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on July 23, 2026, that Russia has sustained approximately 1,434,690 troops since the full-scale invasion commenced on February 24, 2022. This figure includes 1,460 casualties suffered by Russian forces over the preceding day.
In addition to personnel losses, the report detailed significant equipment attrition for Russia, including 12,191 tanks, 24,994 armored combat vehicles, 124,243 vehicles and fuel tanks, 46,570 artillery systems, 1,961 multiple launch rocket systems, 1,515 air defense systems, 438 aircraft, 354 helicopters, and 423,588 operational-tactical drones. Ukraine's General Staff has withheld its own casualty figures, citing operational security.
Independent Western analyses, such as a January 2026 report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), corroborate that Russian casualties substantially exceed those of Ukraine. CSIS estimates the ratio of Russian to Ukrainian losses to be approximately 2.5:1 or 2:1. The same report projected that Ukraine likely experienced between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties from February 2022 to December 2025, with an estimated 100,000 to 140,000 killed in action.
