Ukraine's largest state-owned defense company, Ukroboronprom, dismissed two officials on July 12 following a preliminary investigation into a deadly explosion at one of its ammunition depots. The blast occurred during a Russian attack on the Kyiv suburb of Vyshneve on July 6, triggering powerful secondary explosions that killed seven people and injured 29 others.
According to Ukroboronprom, the dismissals were made after investigators found violations of Ukrainian law and ammunition storage regulations. The company stated that the heads of two state-owned enterprises within the defense conglomerate were dismissed due to these established violations. Additionally, other officials whose actions or inaction could have led to serious consequences were also removed from their positions.
President Volodymyr Zelensky had ordered a criminal investigation into the incident days prior. The SBU identified the heads of the two dismissed state-owned enterprises as primarily responsible for violating ammunition storage regulations by operating a depot in the densely populated Vyshneve area. Ukroboronprom, also known as Ukrainian Defense Industry, comprises approximately 100 enterprises involved in the development and production of various weapons and military equipment.
