UK evacuates embassy staff from Iran amid rising regional tensions

The United Kingdom has temporarily withdrawn its ambassador and all embassy staff from Iran due to the escalating security situation. The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office stated that the British Embassy in Tehran will continue to operate remotely.

The decision, based on an assessment of security risks and prioritizing staff safety, comes shortly after the U.S. ordered the evacuation of personnel from its largest Middle East base, Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar, as President Donald Trump considers military action against Iran. Aircraft have also reportedly been moved from the base.

Britain's envoy to Iran was previously summoned, alongside European diplomats, for a meeting with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. In response, Britain's Middle East Minister Hamish Falconer summoned Iran's Ambassador to London for a meeting.

Earlier, UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper had praised Iranian protesters and called for an end to violence, prioritizing sanctions and economic pressure over military strikes, though she did not rule out allowing the U.S. to use British resources for potential strikes. The UK already advises against all travel to Iran.
