Turkmenistan has condemned an attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, labeling the action by Ukraine as "unacceptable." The incident, which occurred on July 25, 2026, resulted in the death of at least one sailor and injured several others, according to Iran's Foreign Ministry.
In a statement released on Monday, Turkmenistan's Foreign Ministry emphasized that the Caspian Sea is a region of "peace, harmony and good-neighbourliness," a position consistent with its status as a permanently neutral country recognized by the United Nations. The ministry stressed that actions threatening the stability and security of the Caspian are inadmissible.
Iran has accused Ukraine of the strike, describing it as a violation of Article 2(4) of the UN Charter and an act of aggression that could escalate the conflict. Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi stated that the incident "cannot go unanswered" and discussed Tehran's position with EU High Representative Kaja Kallas and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously confirmed long-range strikes against vessels involved in cargo shipments linked to Iran in the Caspian Sea.
