President Donald Trump announced that a high-level meeting with Iran would take place in Doha on Tuesday, with top envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner in attendance. Technical talks are also set to continue on the sidelines.
Trump stated on social media that Iran had requested the meeting. This follows a fragile ceasefire agreement signed on June 17, a 14-point memorandum of understanding aimed at ending four months of conflict. The agreement included provisions for both sides to cease hostilities and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas typically transits.
However, recent tit-for-tat strikes over the weekend have jeopardized the accord. Both the U.S. and Iran have accused each other of violating the interim ceasefire, particularly after an Iranian projectile struck a cargo vessel in the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday. The U.S. stated that it would respond to violence with violence but expressed hope for the peace process to continue.
