A Texas police officer, Chad Eberle, has been arrested at the U.S.-Mexico border after being accused by Mexican authorities of killing three people and critically injuring the mother of his child in Saltillo, Mexico. The Coahuila attorney general’s office stated that the incident, which occurred in July, stemmed from a dispute over the custody of Eberle's three-year-old son.
According to reports, the victims were identified as Ana Laura, 44; Laura Jaquelín, 22; and Emanuel, 44. The child's 26-year-old mother was shot in the head and remains in critical condition. Eberle was apprehended on Wednesday at the international bridge in Piedras Negras as he attempted to cross back into Texas with his son in a gray Chevrolet Silverado.
The three-year-old child was unharmed and has been placed under the care of Coahuila's child welfare agency. Eberle, who previously served in various law enforcement roles across Texas and is described as an army veteran, was admitted to the Saltillo men’s penitentiary to await judicial proceedings.
Eberle was employed as a reserve officer by the Santa Anna police department, working one weekend per month, and was on a leave of absence until December. The department has been in contact with the U.S. consulate in Mexico and the Texas commission on law enforcement regarding the ongoing investigation.
