Russian forces attacked the Ukrainian capital Kyiv with ballistic missiles and drones early Saturday, killing at least nine people and wounding 33 others. Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that air defence units were in operation. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine has run out of interceptor missiles for its US Patriot air defence systems, warning that "every night without them results in more casualties."
More than a dozen explosions reverberated through the capital during several waves of attacks. In the Solomianskyi district, falling debris damaged a five-storey residential building and sparked a fire, leading to the evacuation of 35 people; two died and eight were injured, including two children. In the Darnytskyi district, seven people were killed and 14 injured as the attack caused fires and damage to homes, vehicles, and an administrative building. A residential building in the Shevchenkivskyi district was partially destroyed, trapping people inside.
Lithuania’s embassy in Kyiv was also damaged after two missiles landed nearby, though no injuries were reported. This was the second major attack on Kyiv this week, following a large-scale strike that killed at least 10 people nationwide and saw a Russian missile enter Polish airspace.
In retaliation, Ukraine struck three Russian oil refineries' infrastructure in the Bashkortostan region and sank a sanctioned Russian container ship, Yanina. Zelenskyy has been pressing allies for more support, including a license to manufacture Patriot interceptor missiles, a proposal that US President Donald Trump has expressed caution about.
