The Philippines' coast guard spokesperson, Jay Tarriela, stated that the incident violated international regulations and endangered Filipino personnel. China, however, asserted that its coast guard tracked and drove away two Philippine vessels that had intruded into waters near the disputed Scarborough Shoal, which China calls Huangyan Dao. China's Coast Guard described its actions as 'standard, professional and lawful' and reaffirmed its sovereignty claims.
This confrontation occurred while Southeast Asian foreign ministers, including China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi, were gathered in Manila for ASEAN meetings.
