Palestinians in Gaza marked 1,000 days since Israel launched its full-scale war on the besieged strip, following the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023. Displaced residents in Deir el-Balah observed the milestone amidst widespread destruction and loss of life.
According to Gaza's Government Media Office, Israel's campaign has resulted in the deaths of over 73,000 Palestinians, including more than 21,500 children and 1,022 babies. An additional 9,500 people are missing, many believed to be buried under rubble, while 173,514 have been wounded. Palestinian authorities report that over 90 percent of Gaza has been destroyed, with Israeli forces now controlling 80 percent of the territory. Israel has dropped nearly 250,000 metric tons of explosives, equivalent to 16 atomic bombs.
In Israel, the 1,000-day marker since the October 7 attack was observed with memorials and protests. Families of victims, survivors, and former hostages organized remembrance events, and the October Council called for a nationwide moment of silence. The October 7 attack killed approximately 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and 251 were taken hostage, all of whom have since been returned or their remains recovered.
IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir described October 7 as an attack on the existence of the Jewish people. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump’s Gaza ceasefire plan has stalled over issues including Hamas disarmament and reconstruction.
