Nanning, the capital of China's southwestern Guangxi region, has implemented its highest level of flood control response due to the passage of Typhoon Maysak. State media reported that rivers and reservoirs have swelled significantly, prompting authorities to raise the emergency response level to I from III because of "extremely heavy rain."
Nanning, a city with nearly 9 million people, experienced torrential rain and gale-force winds over the weekend. Some areas saw rainfall exceeding record highs for this time of year, with Nalou Town in Yongning District recording 257.1 mm of rain in a 24-hour period. Winds ranged from Force 6 to 9.
The National Meteorological Center had previously issued a blue alert for Maysak's second landfall along the coast near the border between Guangxi and northern Vietnam. Guangxi province as a whole upgraded its emergency response for major meteorological disasters to Level III. Some localities in Guangxi ordered the suspension of vessel operations and halted maritime recreational activities. The State Flood Control and Drought Relief Headquarters maintained Level IV responses for Hainan, Guangxi, and Guangdong.
Meteorological authorities forecast that Nanning will continue to experience moderate to heavy rain, with localized downpours, over the next two days.
