An Israeli strike in Gaza City killed Mohamed al-Wahidi, a Palestinian official instrumental in organizing public World Cup screenings, along with three others, including two children. The blast occurred in the Sabra neighborhood just before a planned screening of the Egypt-Argentina match.
Al-Wahidi was the director of public relations for the Egyptian Committee in Gaza, the relief arm of the Egyptian government. The committee had organized initiatives to screen soccer matches across the enclave. Coach Hossam Hassan of the Egyptian national team had previously used press briefings to highlight the plight of the Palestinian people.
The Israeli military stated that al-Wahidi was not the target of the strike, which they said aimed for a Hamas militant. They are investigating whether the driver of the car, Ahmed Daghmush, was the intended target.
According to Gaza Health Ministry figures, at least 1,027 Palestinians have been killed since the October ceasefire, with the overall death toll from the Israel-Hamas war standing at 73,098.
