Iran's state media reported that its air defense systems successfully shot down a U.S. Air Force MQ-9A Reaper drone over the city of Andimeshk in Iran's Khuzestan Province. This incident is part of a broader escalation of tensions in the region.
According to Iranian media, the drone was conducting a routine and lawful surveillance mission over international waters when it was downed. A source affiliated with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed the drone transmitted reconnaissance photos before losing communication. This contradicts U.S. military accounts, which stated that an Iranian drone "aggressively approached" the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier in the Arabian Sea, prompting an F-35C fighter jet to shoot it down in self-defense.
In a separate development, the U.S. military reported shooting down Iranian ballistic missiles and drones launched toward the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf Arab allies. U.S. Central Command stated that six out of seven ballistic missiles fired toward Kuwait and Bahrain were intercepted, and four Iranian drones posing an immediate threat to regional maritime traffic were also downed. In response, the U.S. struck some of Iran's coastal surveillance radar sites.
The U.S. military is currently enforcing a blockade on Iranian ports, a measure taken in response to Iran's actions that have disrupted global oil and natural gas shipments, leading to a spike in energy prices. This situation is creating political challenges for President Donald Trump's administration ahead of midterm congressional elections.
