Houthi military claims Saudi drone downed over Sanaa

Yemen's Houthi military spokesperson, Yahya Saree, announced that their forces shot down a Saudi reconnaissance drone over the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, claiming it was engaged in "hostile operations." Saree vowed that the group would continue to defend the country's sovereignty and exercise its right to respond to violations.

Further details emerged from Houthi-affiliated media, which claimed the downed aircraft was a Saudi-operated, Turkish-made Bayraktar Akıncı unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) with tail number 20703. Footage purportedly showing the drone spinning out of control and crashing was released, along with images of wreckage bearing the same tail number, which they linked to the Royal Saudi Air Force. This incident, if confirmed, would mark the first reported loss of a Bayraktar Akıncı drone in Yemen.

This claimed shootdown follows a previous Houthi assertion on July 14, 2026, of downing a Chinese-made Wing Loong II drone over Al-Bayda Governorate. The reported incident occurred in Al Jawf Governorate, a strategic northern region bordering Saudi Arabia and a Houthi stronghold. Saudi Arabia has not issued an official statement regarding the Bayraktar Akıncı claim, and the event has not been independently verified.

The incident takes place amid heightened tensions between the Houthis and the Saudi-led coalition. This follows recent Houthi missile and drone attacks targeting Saudi Aramco facilities and subsequent Saudi-led coalition airstrikes on Houthi targets in Hodeidah Governorate, marking an escalation after a prolonged truce breakdown. The Bayraktar Akıncı is a high-altitude, long-endurance UCAV developed by Baykar, designed for reconnaissance and precision strikes, and Saudi Arabia signed a significant defense agreement with Baykar in July 2023 for its acquisition.
