Explosions were heard in Iran's southern city of Bushehr, with local officials attributing the blast to air defense systems and a projectile strike on a military headquarters on the outskirts of the city. Separately, areas struck by the US in the southwestern city of Omidiyeh resulted in the wounding of at least four people. US Central Command (CENTCOM) told Al Jazeera that the US military had not carried out any strikes in Iran in the past few hours.
Multiple blasts were heard in areas around Bushehr, home to one of Iran’s nuclear plants, and the nearby city of Choghadak, according to Mehr News Agency. Three more explosions were heard in the southern city of Konarak. Bushehr’s deputy governor for political and security affairs, Ehsan Jahanian, told state media outlet IRNA that the blast in the city was caused by air defence systems. Jahanian added that a military headquarters on the outskirts of Bushehr was struck by what he described as a projectile.
Iranian officials stated that US attacks had killed 14 people and injured 78 across five provinces on Wednesday and Thursday. State broadcaster IRIB claimed a railway bridge connecting Tehran and Mashhad was struck by the US, temporarily suspending passenger train services on that route.
Earlier in the week, Iran had attacked commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Vessels from Qatar and Saudi Arabia were hit. The US and Iran have been trading attacks since Tuesday, with Tehran also hitting military sites in Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait. President Donald Trump discussed coordination with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who stated that the war with Iran has not ended and that Israel was prepared to attack Iran if needed.
