The European Union is set to impose new sanctions on Russian military producers after a significant missile and drone attack on Kyiv resulted in numerous casualties. Kaja Kallas, the EU's foreign policy chief, announced on X that she would propose measures targeting entities supporting Russia's military-industrial complex in response to the strikes.
The announcement follows a large-scale assault on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, which killed at least 18 people and injured more than 80. Kyiv's Air Force reported that Russia launched 74 missiles and over 490 attack drones, with some also targeting Zaporizhzhia, Mykolaiv, and Kharkiv.
Earlier in June, the EU had already implemented a package of sanctions against Russia, focusing on its banking, energy, and trade sectors. The effectiveness of any new measures hinges on unanimous approval from all EU member countries.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had previously cut short a visit to Dublin, citing intelligence that indicated an imminent large-scale attack from the Kremlin.
