A powerful typhoon, Bavi, was forecast to make landfall on China's east coast Saturday night, bringing heavy rains and strong winds to the region. This comes after a week of deadly storms across China that have claimed at least 50 lives.
Typhoon Bavi, with maximum sustained winds of 101 mph, was expected to pass north of Taiwan, leading to school closures in Taipei and canceled flights. The storm is forecast to make landfall between Fujian and Zhejiang provinces, south of Shanghai.
Authorities in Zhejiang province have evacuated over 17,000 people and placed 170,000 rescue workers on standby. Fujian province suspended ferry services and recalled fishing boats due to rough seas.
Earlier this week, Tropical Storm Maysak caused severe flooding in southern China's Guangxi region, resulting in 39 deaths. The heavy rainfall led to reservoir breaches and the collapse of a dam in Hengzhou. Additionally, 11 people died in Hubei province due to severe thunderstorms and tornadoes, and a separate landslide in Gansu province killed 21 forestry workers.
