UK and Switzerland sign landmark services trade deal

Negotiations were reportedly intense, with trade minister Chris Bryant acknowledging "shouting across the table" at moments but ultimately aiming for a deal that would improve trade opportunities for businesses in both nations. The agreement solidifies and extends the existing temporary arrangement that allowed Swiss and British services professionals visa-free access to each other's markets since 2019. This access will now also include Swiss residents originating from other countries.

In addition to visa-free travel, the deal includes provisions for UK travelers to enjoy surcharge-free international roaming and grants them access to Switzerland's passport e-gates. This agreement follows a series of trade pacts the UK has pursued with countries like India, South Korea, and the Gulf Cooperation Council, though this is the first to exclusively target services rather than goods.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer highlighted the agreement's importance, stating it will make it easier for British firms to export their expertise to Switzerland, a key European market, thereby supporting domestic jobs and investment. He described the deal as a "landmark agreement" and the sixth trade deal secured by the UK in two years, expected to drive national growth.
