Tatiana Navka, the wife of Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov and a former Olympic ice-skating champion, has initiated legal proceedings to overturn European Union sanctions imposed on her. The sanctions, which include travel bans and financial restrictions, were enacted in June 2022 in response to Russia's actions in Ukraine.
According to details published on the EU's EUR-Lex website, Navka, a Russian citizen born in Soviet Ukraine, argues that the grounds for the restrictions were not properly articulated and that the EU made errors in law and factual assessment. She contends that the EU has failed to demonstrate a sufficient connection between her and the stated objectives of the sanctions.
Navka is seeking over €2 million ($2.3 million) in damages from the Council of the European Union, citing material damage and harm to her reputation. The same official EU database indicates that Yekaterina Ignatova, wife of Sergei Chemezov, the head of the state-owned Rostec defence and industrial corporation, is also using the same legal avenue to challenge sanctions against her.
