Moldovan President Maia Sandu has appointed Deputy Prime Minister Eugeniu Osmocheschu as the country's acting prime minister, following the unexpected resignation of Alexandru Munteanu. Munteanu cited his inability to continue in the role according to his convictions.
Osmocheschu, who also serves as the minister of economic development and digitalization, is set to take office on Wednesday. His prior experience includes a role at the International Finance Corporation, the private sector arm of the World Bank.
Sandu had indicated she would consult with parliamentary factions to find a successor for Munteanu. Her pro-European Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) holds a majority in the 101-seat parliament, having secured a mandate in the September parliamentary elections.
The current government will continue to operate in an interim capacity until a new government is formally appointed by parliament. Osmocheschu is scheduled to chair a government meeting on Wednesday.
