Businessman Vasile Tofan was nominated to be Moldova’s new prime minister on Saturday, following the resignation of Alexandru Munteanu earlier this month due to a series of scandals. President Maia Sandu announced Tofan's designation after consulting with various political parties.
Tofan stated that his key priorities would be to relaunch the Moldovan economy and to expedite the country's integration into the European Union. He expressed a desire for Moldova to sign a treaty to join the EU by the end of 2028.
The previous prime minister, Munteanu, had stepped down citing an inability to exercise his mandate in line with his beliefs, amidst scandals including the arrest of a state secretary on bribery charges. Under Moldovan law, Tofan now has 15 days to present his government program and secure a vote of confidence.
