The incident occurred in the fourth inning as Lugo delivered a full-count changeup. Lugo immediately fell to the ground but was able to get up without assistance and speak with teammates and training staff before walking off the field. Nimmo, who was Lugo's teammate for seven years on the New York Mets, ran to the mound to check on him. The Royals posted on social media that Lugo is doing well and will undergo appropriate protocol and testing. Prior to his exit, Lugo had thrown 3 1/3 innings, allowing one run on 44 pitches, three hits, one walk, and recorded two strikeouts. He entered the game with a 4-3 record and a 3.91 ERA. Mason Black replaced Lugo on the mound.
