The Baltimore Orioles have placed closer Ryan Helsley on the 15-day injured list due to discomfort in his right elbow. The move, retroactive to Tuesday, comes after Helsley experienced the discomfort while warming up during Wednesday's game against the Chicago White Sox. He did not enter the game.
Helsley, 31, signed a two-year, $28 million free agent deal with Baltimore in December. Manager Craig Albernaz stated that Helsley is exploring his options and gathering information, with more updates expected. This is not the first time Helsley has dealt with elbow issues, as he was previously on the injured list from May 1 to June 16 with right elbow inflammation. This season, he has converted eight of his nine save opportunities.
In corresponding moves, the Orioles recalled INF/OF Jeremiah Jackson and right-hander Anthony Nunez from Triple-A Norfolk, while designating catcher Chadwick Tromp for assignment. The team also had right-hander Albert Suárez's new minor league deal approved by MLB. Helsley was later activated from the injured list on June 16, 2026, after pitching on April 28th, and Nunez was optioned to Norfolk.
Albernaz initially expressed a low level of concern, noting that an MRI came back clean and Helsley was prescribed anti-inflammatories. However, Helsley had felt the discomfort for about a week prior to the IL placement. He has been a strong performer for the Orioles, with a 2.53 ERA in 10 2/3 innings and a perfect 7-for-7 in save attempts according to one report. The Orioles are currently dealing with multiple injuries, with 12 players on the IL.
