Ronald Acuña Jr., the 2023 NL MVP, has been placed on the 10-day injured list by the Atlanta Braves due to a strained left hamstring. The star right fielder sustained the injury Tuesday night during a game against the Chicago White Sox when he pulled up limping after attempting to beat out a grounder. An MRI on Wednesday confirmed a Grade 1 strain, which manager Walt Weiss described as "not terrible" but sufficient to warrant an IL stint.
This is Acuña's second left hamstring injury this season; he previously missed time from May 3-18 with a similar ailment. Weiss indicated that while this injury may not be as severe as the last, Acuña will still require time to heal. To make room on the roster, the Braves selected first baseman Rowdy Tellez from Triple-A Gwinnett, where he had been batting .259 with eight homers. Additionally, right-hander Jhancarlos Lara was designated for assignment. In further roster moves, James Karinchak was added to the big league roster, Carlos Carrasco was designated for assignment, and right-hander JR Ritchie was recalled, while reliever Tyler Kinley was placed on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation. Acuña, a five-time All-Star, is batting .251 with seven homers, 22 RBIs, and 15 stolen bases this season. The Braves currently lead the NL East by eight games with a 45-23 record. Acuña has a history of significant injuries, including a torn ACL in his left knee in May 2024 and a torn right ACL in 2021.
