S&P Dow Jones Indices and Pantera Capital have introduced the S&P Pantera Digital Asset Index, a new benchmark designed for institutional investors seeking a structured approach to digital asset allocation. The index notably excludes major cryptocurrencies Bitcoin (BTC) and XRP, citing their failure to meet a key revenue-generation requirement.
Instead, the index features Ethereum (ETH), Binance Coin (BNB), Solana (SOL), TRON (TRX), and Hyperliquid (HYPE) as its top five constituents. The S&P Pantera Digital Asset Index comprises 18 constituents in total. Unlike many existing crypto indices that focus on market capitalization or price alone, this new benchmark adopts a methodology similar to traditional financial indices, prioritizing tokens and projects with demonstrable real-world utility and actual revenue generation.
Kathy Clay, CEO of S&P Dow Jones Indices, stated that the aim is to bring stock index discipline to digital assets, favoring protocols with verifiable economic activity over those driven by hype or price momentum. The index weights holdings by market capitalization, with quarterly rebalancing and specific caps: no single token can exceed 35% of the total, and no other holding can top 20%, mirroring rules used in S&P's equity benchmarks. The exclusion of Bitcoin and XRP has drawn criticism from their respective communities.
