Crypto firm Ripple has become a Premier Member of the x402 Foundation, signaling its commitment to expanding the use of XRP and RLUSD for AI agentic payments on the XRP Ledger. The announcement coincides with the operational launch of the x402 Foundation under the Linux Foundation's neutral governance.
Ripple stated that as AI agents increasingly handle transaction lifecycles, there is a need for payment systems as fast and reliable as data exchange. The company has been developing tools and infrastructure on the XRP Ledger to support these agentic payments, including enabling AI agents to pay with XRP and RLUSD.
This move follows Ripple's launch of the XRPL AI Starter Kit in June and the recent launch of the XRPL AI hub by Ripple-backed t54.ai. The XRP Ledger has already seen significant adoption of agentic payments, recently crossing the milestone of 1 million such transactions.
The x402 Foundation's operational launch, facilitated by Coinbase's contribution of the x402 protocol, aims to foster collaborative development among developers, financial institutions, cloud providers, and other community members. Premier members alongside Ripple include Adyen, Amazon Web Services, American Express, Circle, Cloudflare, Coinbase, Fiserv, Google, Mastercard, Monad Foundation, MoonPay, Shopify, Solana Foundation, Stellar Development Foundation, Stripe, and Visa.
