Radar Chat, a new application developed by the team behind Cake Wallet, has launched, aiming to simplify Bitcoin transactions by integrating them directly into encrypted messaging conversations. The app, available on iOS and Android, utilizes Signal's open-source protocol to provide end-to-end encrypted messaging alongside self-custodial Bitcoin payments via the Lightning Network.
Founder Vikrant Sharma explained that the core idea behind Radar is to bridge the gap between communication and payment, as the people users interact with are often the same people they pay. Unlike centralized services such as PayPal or Cash App, Radar Chat emphasizes user control over funds and transactions, with private keys managed by the users themselves.
While built independently from Signal, Radar Chat leverages its trusted privacy technology. Sharma noted that many privacy-conscious Bitcoin users already rely on Signal, making it a familiar foundation for the new payment-integrated messaging service. The app is not limited to microtransactions, having successfully tested payments up to $5,000, with transaction capacity dependent on Lightning Network liquidity.
During setup, users are provided with a recovery seed phrase for their Bitcoin, and an encrypted backup linked to their Signal account offers an additional recovery option. Radar Chat also financially supports the Signal project, recognizing the importance of privacy-preserving communication.
