Bitcoin treasury company Metaplanet has reported a strong operating performance for the first half of 2026, achieving an operating profit of ¥3.331 billion ($20.3 million). This figure represents a 136.3% increase compared to the previous period. The company's revenue also saw a substantial rise of 133.7% to ¥4.944 billion ($33 million) for the six months ending June 30.
Despite the robust operating results, Metaplanet recorded a significant net loss of ¥182.774 billion ($1.2 billion). This loss is primarily attributed to an unrealized Bitcoin valuation loss of ¥184.297 billion, triggered by a decline in the cryptocurrency's price through June 30. The company emphasized that this valuation loss is a non-cash accounting item and that no Bitcoin was sold during the period.
Metaplanet's Bitcoin holdings expanded, growing from 35,102 BTC at the end of 2025 to 43,000 BTC by June 30, 2026. The company's Bitcoin Income business was a key driver of its performance, with segment revenue reaching ¥4.742 billion and segment profit at ¥4.279 billion. A substantial portion of this revenue, ¥4.583 billion, came from Bitcoin derivatives trading, specifically option premium income.
The company has reaffirmed its full-year profit forecast, though it acknowledged that the pace of progress has been slower than initially anticipated due to weaker financing conditions and market volatility.
