Japanese game developer Gumi announced on Tuesday the launch of a 3 billion yen (approximately $18.3 million) crypto asset fund, set to begin operations on Saturday. The fund is a collaboration with SBI Financial Services, with backing from Daiwa Securities Group and other investors.
Operated by SBI Crypto Fund, a joint venture where SBI Financial Services holds a 51% stake and Gumi's subsidiary gC Labs holds 49%, the fund will primarily invest in Bitcoin and major altcoins. It will employ strategies such as staking, portfolio rebalancing, and hedging.
Gumi stated the fund's objective is to bridge Japan's corporate sector with the cryptocurrency market and to build an operational track record in anticipation of a potential future lifting of Japan's ban on crypto exchange-traded funds.
This initiative builds upon Gumi's expanding cryptocurrency business, which includes managing its own XRP-centric crypto holdings and providing portfolio management services through Hinode Technologies. The company's latest annual report indicates that crypto assets have become a substantial part of its balance sheet, with holdings nearly doubling to 14.13 billion yen as of April 30, 2026, compared to 7.58 billion yen a year earlier.
