Cypherpunk Technologies has significantly expanded its presence in the Zcash ecosystem by acquiring a mining fleet from Winklevoss Capital for $33.33 million. This acquisition positions Cypherpunk as a major player, controlling approximately 18% of the Zcash network's total hashrate with its new operation producing 4.2 GSol/s.
The company's strategy now includes both mining and direct holdings, with Cypherpunk currently possessing 323,394 ZEC, representing about 1.9% of the cryptocurrency's circulating supply. Cypherpunk has set an ambitious target to eventually own 5% of the total ZEC supply.
Cypherpunk views Zcash mining as economically attractive compared to Bitcoin mining or AI data center workloads under current market conditions, though profitability is contingent on ZEC's price, network hashrate, mining difficulty, and operational costs.
This expansion follows a notable surge in ZEC's price during the latter half of 2025, which revived interest in privacy-focused cryptocurrencies after a period of lower market attention. Despite a subsequent correction, Zcash has seen substantial gains, increasing over 1,300% in the past year.
Separately, the Zcash network recently underwent its Ironwood upgrade on July 28. This upgrade introduced a new shielded transaction protocol, replacing the Orchard pool to bolster the network's security architecture. The upgrade was prompted by the discovery of a flaw in the Orchard pool that could have potentially allowed for the undetected creation of counterfeit ZEC, posing a risk to the integrity of the cryptocurrency's supply.
