Tata Power, a major Indian integrated power utility, has announced plans to construct the country's first nuclear power plant developed by the private sector, targeting a completion date between 2032 and 2033. CEO Praveer Sinha indicated that construction could commence as early as 2028. This development is enabled by India's recent decision to open its civil nuclear sector to private investment, a move formalized by the Atomic Energy Bill approved in late 2025. India has ambitious goals to significantly expand its nuclear power capacity, aiming for 100 GW by 2047, a substantial increase from the current 8.8 GW. This expansion is projected to require significant capital investment. State-owned NTPC Ltd is expected to play a major role, accounting for 30% of the new capacity, and is actively seeking global uranium assets to secure fuel. Additionally, India plans to domestically develop five small modular reactors by 2033.
