Finland's Arctic Sisu has selected e-methane as the initial product for its Power-to-X strategy, asserting it provides a quicker and less risky path to market compared to other hydrogen derivatives. The company has shifted from a phased development to full-scale plans for its first plant, leading to revised cost estimates.
Arctic Sisu is proceeding with a substantial e-methane project in Kotka, southeast Finland. Chief engineer Antti Pohjoranta stated that e-methane represents the most commercially viable entry point for hydrogen derivatives. The project is designed to yield 56,100 tonnes per year of renewable hydrogen, which will then be converted into 113,100 tonnes per year of e-methane. This conversion will utilize biogenic CO2 sourced from the adjacent paper producer, MM Kotkamills. Arctic Sisu intends to secure renewable electricity through power purchase agreements with Finnish assets.
Recently, the company decided to pursue a single-phase development for the project, aiming to improve its economics and mitigate execution risks. Pohjoranta noted that sufficient demand exists to justify building the plant in one stage, adding that much of the necessary electricity infrastructure would require full-scale construction regardless of the development approach. The company has already secured an offtaker for the project, though details remain confidential.
Pohjoranta highlighted that the Power-to-X market is diverse and offers decarbonization opportunities across sectors like shipping, steelmaking, and chemicals. However, Arctic Sisu has focused on e-methane due to its clear near-term commercial prospects. E-methane can be integrated into existing gas infrastructure and applications, bypassing many challenges faced by newer fuel value chains. "We find it the most cost-effective and pragmatic approach at this point in time," Pohjoranta said.
Arctic Sisu acknowledges that methane is a greenhouse gas and may face future competition from electrification or alternative fuels. Nevertheless, the company believes the market for renewable methane is substantial enough to warrant the Kotka investment. They also view e-methane as a stepping stone for broader Power-to-X initiatives and a learning opportunity for new technologies and supply chains. The Kotka project is currently undergoing Finland's permitting process after completing its environmental impact assessment. The company targets a final investment decision by mid-2027, contingent on successful permitting and development, with commercial production anticipated in 2030.
Capital expenditure is now projected to be between €500 million and €600 million, potentially falling below earlier estimates of approximately €600 million for the entire plant. Pohjoranta indicated that increased experience among equipment suppliers, technology licensors, and engineering firms in hydrogen and Power-to-X developments is contributing to reduced project costs and enhanced investor confidence.
