China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) has initiated operations of the Haiyou Anlan, the world's first 16-megawatt floating wind power platform. This TLP-supported turbine, installed 136 kilometers off the coast in the South China Sea, is now supplying power to the Lufeng Oilfield. CNOOC stated the platform is designed to withstand severe weather conditions, including super typhoons. The project is expected to generate 54 million kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, significantly reducing the oilfield's reliance on fossil fuels. CNOOC anticipates saving 15,000 cubic meters of fuel oil and cutting carbon dioxide emissions by 35,000 tons per year. The company is combining wind power with storage and conventional fuel generation to manage wind variability, framing the approach as 'oil and gas plus new energy' for deepwater resource development.
