China Coal Prices Surge Amid Heatwave-Driven Power Demand

↳ Why This Matters

The surge in Chinese coal prices highlights the country's continued reliance on fossil fuels to meet energy demand, particularly during extreme weather events, impacting global commodity markets and the energy transition narrative.

Key facts

  • China's coal prices are surging as extreme heat drives up electricity demand.
  • Thermal coal prices are expected to continue rising due to peak consumption season and supply constraints.
  • Four coal mines in Yulin, Shaanxi province, were ordered to suspend operations, impacting supply.
  • Heat waves are negatively affecting hydropower and wind power generation, necessitating increased coal use.
  • China's energy plan supports coal power as a crucial guarantee for the electricity system.

Coal demand and prices in China have seen a significant increase in recent days, driven by widespread heat waves that are boosting electricity consumption. The benchmark spot coal prices at the port of Qinhuangdao have reversed an earlier slump and are poised for further gains in the coming weeks, according to the China Coal Transportation and Distribution Association.

Analysts at the association, including Li Xuegang, predict that thermal coal prices are more likely to rise than fall. This outlook is based on the ongoing peak season for coal-fired power consumption, the yet-to-materialize impacts of El Niño, and the cumulative effect of tightening supply and growing demand.

Adding to supply concerns, analysts at Mysteel noted new mine shutdowns in Yulin, the largest coal-producing hub in Shaanxi province. The order to suspend operations at four coal mines in the region has been identified as a potential catalyst for market strengthening.

High summer temperatures are affecting most of central and eastern China, with unusually high temperatures also expected in northeastern cities like Beijing and Shenyang. The heat waves are also depressing hydropower output and wind power generation, necessitating increased reliance on coal to meet energy needs.

Despite sufficient coal inventories, domestic production has faced setbacks since a major mining disaster in May prompted authorities to enhance safety checks and order suspensions in several mines in the Shanxi region. However, Chinese authorities are not restricting coal power growth in their new five-year energy plan, emphasizing its role as a "bottom-line guarantee" for the electricity system amidst the expansion of renewable energy sources.
