Australian gasoline prices surge to four-month high amid Middle East tensions

Gasoline prices across Australia reached their highest point since March in the week ending July 26, with the nationwide average price hitting US$1.27 (AUS$1.82) per liter. This surge in fuel costs, which also affected diesel prices, is attributed to rising international crude oil prices driven by ongoing hostilities in the Middle East. Despite being a significant producer of natural gas and LNG, Australia depends on imports for the majority of its transportation fuel. The situation was exacerbated in March by the Hormuz crisis and a fire at one of the country's two refineries. In response to spiking fuel prices and financial stress on consumers, the Australian federal government previously halved the fuel excise on gasoline and diesel for three months. The government also secured approximately 100 million liters of additional diesel and three shipments of jet fuel from countries including Brunei, South Korea, and China to ensure supply amid global shortages. Australia's Minister for Foreign Affairs, Penny Wong, emphasized the nation's efforts to work with regional partners to address the economic shock and maintain essential fuel flows. Early on Monday, international oil prices experienced a decline as de-escalation efforts emerged, though the long-term impact of diplomacy over conflict remains uncertain.
