Law enforcement agencies in Ukraine conducted extensive searches on July 7 at the facilities, contractors, and family residences of Vyriy Industries, a prominent Ukrainian drone manufacturer. The company's CEO, Oleksii Babenko, vehemently denied allegations of price gouging, asserting that Vyriy produces some of the most affordable drones on the market. He suggested the raids might be a deliberate attempt to disrupt the business for personal or minor interests.
The State Bureau of Investigations confirmed it is investigating an unnamed drone producer, widely believed to be Vyriy Industries, for allegedly inflating production and administration costs on government contracts totaling Hr 7 billion ($157 million). The investigation also includes potential money laundering through shell companies and tax evasion, with over Hr 197 million ($4.4 million) in suspicious financial transactions identified by Ukraine's State Financial Monitoring Service. During the searches, law enforcement reportedly found Hr 40 million ($900,000) in cash at Vyriy's offices, which Babenko explained was legitimate cash withdrawn for employee payroll.
Vyriy Industries, employing over 1,000 people, is a significant player in Ukraine's defense tech sector, producing fixed-wing, fiber-optic, and kamikaze drones, as well as relay equipment. Babenko stated that approximately a quarter of the FPV drones used by the Ukrainian army are manufactured by his company. Despite the searches impacting daily deliveries, he pledged to maintain production levels of tens of thousands of drones per day.
Babenko, a notable young entrepreneur who co-founded Vyriy Industries in 2023 and was recognized in Forbes Ukraine's 30 Under 30, recently acquired a 75% stake in the media outlet Babel. Concerns have been raised within the industry that these searches could signal a broader crackdown on Ukrainian defense technology firms, potentially through corporate raiding or politically motivated actions. Some insiders pointed to the opacity of Ukraine's state procurement system, which they claim prioritizes low prices over quality, as a contributing factor to such issues.
