Stellantis, the parent company of Chrysler, is initiating a recall for over 1.5 million Ram 1500 pickup trucks globally due to two distinct safety concerns. The first issue involves a potentially improperly attached second-row center or driver side seat belt buckle anchor, which could compromise the seat belt system's performance and increase the risk of occupant injury. Stellantis has reported one injury potentially linked to this defect.
The second recall addresses a software malfunction in the antilock braking system module that can inadvertently disable the electronic stability control (ESC) system. According to NHTSA documents, the failure of the ESC system when intervention is expected could lead to a vehicle crash without prior warning, although the brakes themselves would remain functional. This issue affects trucks from the 2019 and 2021 through 2024 model years.
The seat belt recall encompasses approximately 1.27 million vehicles in the United States, 156,000 in Canada, 15,000 in Mexico, and about 75,000 outside North America. The affected model years for this issue range from 2019 to 2026.
For the stability control software problem, Stellantis stated it is unaware of any crashes or injuries. Dealers will update the affected trucks' software at no cost to owners, who will begin receiving notification letters around October 3rd. The company also noted that owners might be alerted to the ESC issue if the ABS, ESC, adaptive cruise control, and forward collision warning lights illuminate at startup.
In addition to the Ram recalls, Stellantis is also recalling about 33,000 Jeep Gladiators (2022-2024) and Jeep Wranglers (2018-2024) due to a potential short circuit problem in the instrument panel.
