Billionaire Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has been approached and entered talks to potentially buy a stake in Premier League club Liverpool FC. According to reports, Bezos has held discussions about joining a syndicate of investors led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia. Liverpool's current owners, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), have confirmed that a group, represented by Bhatia, has approached them regarding a stake in the club.
Bezos, with an estimated net worth of $259 billion, has previously explored bids in sports, including the NFL, but did not proceed with those deals. The negotiations are understood to be similar to the 2023 agreement where Dynasty Equity made a strategic minority investment in Liverpool worth between £82 million and £164 million, acquiring a 4% stake.
FSG has been open to new investment since 2022, whether it be a minority shareholding or a full sale. The news comes amid a period of change at the club, with FSG's CEO of Football, Michael Edwards, having left, and sporting director Richard Hughes reportedly linked with a move to Saudi Arabia. Bhatia's consortium could acquire as much as 30% of the club, and his decision to step away from QPR reportedly paves the way for this potential acquisition.
