Gigantic tunnel-boring machines are creating the world's longest railway tunnel, generating a significant volume of debris that must be relocated and disposed of responsibly.
Engineers and planners have devised innovative solutions to mitigate the environmental impact. A substantial landfill, the largest in the European Union by volume, has been established in the Padaster Valley to accommodate the 7.7 million cubic meters of spoil. To minimize disruption to local communities, a 30-kilometer conveyor belt system has been implemented, significantly reducing the need for heavy lorry traffic. An exclusive access tunnel connects the construction site directly to the landfill valley, allowing rock chippings to be transported uphill via conveyor belts.
Environmental considerations have been paramount. The Padasterbach river was temporarily diverted through a 1,500-meter tunnel to allow for the landfill's expansion. The project has also involved raising the valley floor by nearly 80 meters, fundamentally reshaping the landscape. Post-construction, a comprehensive renaturation plan is set to begin next year, aiming to transform the current stony wasteland into a blossoming Alpine landscape with a mix of mountain forest, pastures, and ecological compensation areas.
Stringent environmental standards, mandated by Tyrolean politicians and EU regulations, have guided the project. This includes extensive environmental impact assessments and compliance with around 350 nature protection conditions. Notable protective measures have included the successful relocation of a 250-square-meter orchid meadow and the installation of nesting boxes for protected bat species, such as the brown long-eared bat, to ensure their conservation status is maintained.
