BMW is initiating a recall of 318,495 vehicles in the United States due to a defect in the starter motor relay that can lead to overheating and potential fires. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) confirmed the campaign, advising owners to park affected models outdoors and away from structures until repairs are completed.
The issue arises from moisture exposure causing corrosion in the starter motor relay. This corrosion can prevent the vehicle from starting or, in more severe cases, cause overheating and short circuits, posing a fire risk even after the vehicle is shut off. BMW identified that water penetration in certain starter motor assemblies manufactured between late 2015 and 2021 is responsible for the defect.
Globally, the recall affects nearly all BMW models produced between September 28, 2015, and September 7, 2021, with approximately 196,000 vehicles impacted in the U.S. and at least 136,500 in Germany. Affected U.S. models include various 330i, Z4, 530i, X3, X4, 430i, and 230i vehicles, as well as the Toyota Supra, which shares components with the BMW Z4.
BMW plans to begin repairs, which involve a complete replacement of the starter motor at no cost to customers, in mid-November. U.S. owners will receive official notices starting November 14, 2025. The company has also provided a dedicated service line for customer assistance.
