X relaunches rebuilt Android app after year-long effort

The new Android version was built from the ground up with a focus on improving core functionalities such as loading times, scrolling performance, and notification reliability. X stated that the modernized foundation will allow for faster development and deployment of new features.

Nikita Bier, X's Head of Product, described the project as one of the largest engineering undertakings in the company's history. He highlighted that the app was rewritten entirely, rather than simply updated, utilizing a clean Kotlin and Jetpack Compose stack. While the AI Grok assisted developers, X indicated it had no direct visibility into its specific codebase contributions.

Bier noted that the app is now faster, smoother, and more reliable, with the potential to attract more users in global markets where Android is dominant. However, he acknowledged that some areas still require refinement, including performance optimization for older devices and the integration of features like Spaces, X's live audio component. Additional features such as a new video editor, react-with-video, cashtags, and custom timelines are also planned for future releases on Android.
