WindBorne Systems, a startup leveraging advanced AI and a network of weather balloons for enhanced meteorological forecasts, has secured $37 million in Series B funding. The investment, co-led by Khosla Ventures and Galvanize, values the company at $250 million post-funding. Founded in 2019, WindBorne utilizes its unique data collection method, which includes balloons capable of flying into typhoon eyes and sensor packages that become floating buoys, to feed into its proprietary forecasting model.
CEO John Dean highlighted that AI advancements have made sophisticated weather simulations accessible on less powerful hardware, a significant shift from the supercomputer dependency of the past. This technological evolution has allowed WindBorne to develop its own forecasting capabilities. The company's data set, described as a "planetary nervous system," is integrated with data from global government agencies. Dean stated that their balloon data provides more accurate forecasts with greater value per data point than satellite data, and that revenue growth has de-risked demand for investors.
Currently, WindBorne's primary clients are government entities, including the U.S. National Weather Service, and research partnerships with the U.S. Air Force and Navy. The company is now focused on expanding into the commercial sector, particularly targeting investment funds that utilize weather data for predicting commodity prices and other business outcomes. The new funding will support advancements in compute power, a transition from satellite to mesh radio for balloon communications, and the expansion of its sales and marketing teams.
While startups have historically found it challenging to penetrate the private sector with data-sensing businesses, requiring established workflows and expertise, AI is seen as a key enabler. Saloni Multani of Galvanize noted that AI is making it easier to integrate weather forecasts into broader business decision-making, which has traditionally been a costly and difficult process.
