Autonomous driving technology company WeRide Inc. has set a target for full-year break-even by 2029, aiming to achieve this milestone through increased sales of its driver-assistance systems and an asset-light expansion strategy in overseas markets. This focus on profitability over aggressive fleet scaling is a key differentiator in the capital-intensive autonomous driving sector.
WeRide's CEO, Han Xu, emphasized a strategy that prioritizes sustainable business metrics, drawing parallels to the collapse of China's bike-sharing sector due to over-expansion. As of late October 2025, the company operated approximately 750 robotaxis, a figure smaller than competitors like Pony.ai and Baidu's Apollo Go. WeRide plans to expand its fleet to between 2,000 and 3,000 vehicles by the end of 2026.
Financially, WeRide reported strong third-quarter results, with total revenue increasing 144% year-on-year and its robotaxi segment revenue surging by 761%. In the second quarter of 2026, revenue grew 82% year-over-year to RMB232 million, with gross margin improving to 37.5%. Net and EBITDA losses narrowed as expenses grew at a slower pace than revenue. Overseas markets contributed nearly 40% of Q2 revenue, and the overseas fleet doubled to about 400 vehicles. The company also saw momentum in its L2+/L3 advanced driver-assistance systems, delivering about 30,000 units in Q2, with expectations to exceed 100,000 installed vehicles by year-end.
WeRide's L4 fleet reached approximately 3,400 units in Q2, with its Robotaxi fleet exceeding 1,800 units. The company is pursuing an asset-light international approach, partnering with local operators rather than owning vehicles, and providing technology and services for recurring fees. Annualized technology-service revenue per Robotaxi is estimated to exceed $50,000. WeRide has announced Robotaxi commercial partnerships in Madrid, Zurich, and Copenhagen, and expanded driverless Robotaxi coverage in Abu Dhabi.
