During a 45-minute test drive on Rhode Island's coastal roads, reviewer Ben Shimkus found the Slate to be more substantial than its appearance suggested. The immediate punch from the electric motor made it feel quick off the line, and its balanced chassis handled corners impressively. While initial regenerative braking inputs were jerky, they became natural with practice, allowing for one-pedal driving. However, a prototype issue caused the truck to roll backward on an incline before the hill-hold system engaged, a behavior Slate is reportedly refining.

Slate's business model diverges from industry trends, focusing on physical customization options like speaker upgrades, new upholstery, and SUV conversion kits, rather than monthly software subscriptions. The company also opted for a minimalist cabin with fewer screens, aiming to reduce driver distraction. These choices underscore Slate's bet that consumers are ready for a less complex, more affordable vehicle.

Despite minor rattles over bumps and an incomplete range display, attributed to the prototype's status, the Slate truck impressed with its handling, space, and overall feel.
