River AI, a startup co-founded by xAI's Igor Babuschkin, announced on Tuesday that it has raised $1.1 billion to expand its offerings of custom AI tools. The company aims to empower clients to build personalized AI models using their own data, shifting away from reliance on general-purpose models from large AI labs.
The funding round was led by General Catalyst and AMP PBC, with strategic investments from Nvidia and AMD Ventures. Y Combinator and Temasek also participated as additional investors.
River AI's strategy centers on the belief that enterprise AI will increasingly move towards companies customizing and owning their proprietary models, leveraging open-weight architectures. The company highlighted its API, which allows enterprises to conduct complex reinforcement-learning training runs in 15 to 20 minutes without requiring an dedicated infrastructure team, and claims it is two to four times more cost-effective than closed-source alternatives.
CEO Igor Babuschkin stated, "AI should be open, freely available, and affordable. It should feel like it is working for the person using it, not the lab that trained it." Babuschkin's background includes work on generative modeling and reinforcement learning at Google DeepMind, as well as leading large-scale training at OpenAI before co-founding xAI. River AI did not disclose its valuation following the funding round.
